Software Engineering for Computational Science Software (SECoSS)

Knowledge and Quality Management for Computational Science Software

This subproject generates knowledge and quality management methods to support the development of computational science software. It adapts typical software engineering concepts and methods such as product lines, requirements and design patterns, rationale management, reviews, static or dynamic analysis as well as tailoring corresponding tool support.

In a pilot study, 16 groups working on computational science software at the IWR were interviewed. Based on this, the research project identified general characteristics and the resulting challenges with respect to knowledge and quality management. On the basis of this, solutions for these challenges will be developed in the context of the computational science framework DUNE. (DUNE, the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment is a modular toolbox for solving partial differential equations with grid-based methods.)

After successful evaluation, the solutions and the experiences gained will be generalised. Ultimately, developers of computational science software will be able to revert to these results and benefit from them.
